The Y Lifeguard Program is a scenario-based training developed with input from the YMCA and other aquatic professionals to ensure that lifeguards—the ones we hire and the ones we certify—are the best in the business. Join the best in the business by attending the certification course at the Oroville YMCA.

AGE: You must be age 16 or older by the last day of the Lifeguard Program.
WATER SKILLS: On the first day of the course you will be required to swim 100 yards (front crawl), tread water for 2 minutes, and swim to the bottom of 12 feet. In addition, you must be able to swim 50 yards using front crawl (head up), sidestroke, breaststroke, breaststroke (head up), and elementary backstroke.
If you an unable to complete the in water skills test you will not be allowed to progress in the course. You will be allowed to transfer to a course held on a later date.
You will need to bring the following to your course:
- Athletic swim suit and multiple towels
- Picture ID (or other proof of age)
- Upon successful completion of the course you will receive the following certifications:
- Lifeguard pool, water park & waterfront (good for 2 years)
- CPR for the Professional Rescuer (good for 1 year)
- (AED) Automated External Defibrillator (good for 1 year)
- Emergency Oxygen Administration (good for 2 years)
- Basic First Aid (good for 2 years)
JR. LIFEGUARD AND YASA
This course is designed to teach and certify teens and adults assisting in the aquatics environment as Deck Attendants and Water Fitness Instructors.
8:00am - 4:00pm
Be at least 14 years of age and pass a pre-requisite swim test. Must Complete all e-learning before the start of the course.
Certification: Every two years, must pass all written and pool testing.

First aid for public Safety-title 22
This American Red Cross Certification is required for all lifeguards who work with the public. The course if offered to meet the 15 hour requirement of additional first aid training specified in the Title 22 language.
