This summer, many of the kids in Shawn’s neighborhood will spend their days unsupervised, learning the wrong lessons – the lessons of the street. Shawn’s mother prefers that he spend his days at YMCA summer camp, learning the lessons of positive values and friendship.
For more than 70 years, Bear Valley Y Camp has provided scholarships to send kids like Shawn from disadvantaged neighborhoods to YMCA summer camp.Camp leaves a lifelong impression on kids, many of whom experience the beauty and fun of the great outdoors for the first time. Campers form strong and lasting relationships with mentors and friends. They meet children from other cultures and backgrounds. They learn new skills including teamwork and self-discipline. They have fun in a safe and nurturing environment and build self-esteem.
