Y Brings Swim Lessons & Water Safety to Youth Detention Facility

Published 08.13.15

The YMCA of Superior California has partnered with Sacramento County to bring swim lessons, water safety, and recreation swim to youth at the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility (Juvenile Hall) this summer, thanks to a generous grant from the California Endowment.

Each week, YMCA staff serve approximately 100 kids of all ages and levels - teaching them invaluable swim and water safety skills they might not otherwise have an opportunity to learn. The goal is for kids to leave the program with the knowledge and resources they need to stay safe in and around water. In an average year, eight people drown in local rivers. For all kids, and adults, the importance of learning swim and water safety skills cannot be understated. We are thrilled to collaborate with the Youth Detention Facility to ensure that more kids in the Sacramento area will know how to swim and be safe in and around water as a result of this important partnership.
