Program Types

Youth Leagues

Our youth basketball leagues focus on teaching the fundamentals of the game in a supportive and encouraging environment. Players build skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense, while also learning the importance of teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship. Each season includes practices and games, giving kids the chance to grow in confidence and enjoy being part of a team.

Adult Leagues

Stay active and competitive in our adult basketball leagues! Players can join fully organized leagues that include scheduled games, referees, and a season format. Whether you’re here to challenge yourself, improve your game, or just enjoy the thrill of playing, our leagues strike the perfect balance between fun and competition in a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere.

Adult Drop-In Basketball

For those who prefer a more casual game, our drop-in basketball sessions provide open gym time to play with others in the community. It’s a great way to stay active, enjoy friendly competition, and connect with fellow players—without the commitment of a full league season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Practice is one weekday evening per week. Practice may be on Sunday afternoon for basketball, dependent upon registration numbers. Practice usually takes place from 4:00 to 8:00pm and is 45 - 60 min in length. The day and time will be chosen by the volunteer coach at the coach meeting. The coach meeting is generally scheduled to take place the week before practice is set to start. At the coach meeting they will be instructed to reach out to their rosters and relay all of the season information and practice schedule.

The teams are formed before the coaches have picked their practice times. So we are unable to honor practice time requests until after the coach meeting. If your child gets placed on a team that practices at a time you cannot make, email sports@ymcasuperiorcal.org to see if there is space on a team that practices when you and your child are available.

We allow player requests but we do not allow coach/ team requests. Requests need to be mutual. Meaning the parent of child 1 puts down the name of child 2 and the parent of child 2 puts down the name of child 1 during the registration process. Additionally, we try to keep our league as equitable and inclusive as possible, by trying to keep requests to half a team max. We feel this promotes equity because it prevents teams from getting "stacked" with players that have more experience. And it promotes inclusion because now children from a different background can work together through random assignments.

The YMCA is a volunteer organization, and all of the coaches for our team sports are volunteers. They can be parents or members of the community. All of our coaches are required to get Livescan fingerprinting and complete concussion training. For our smaller classes, such as Peewee sports and Esports, we use a qualified and trained staff member.

The commitment of coaching is one practice and one game per week for the duration of the 8 week sport season. The YMCA will supply the equipment and any training materials you may need, including practice plans. If you are interested in coaching, please email sports@ymcasuperiorcal.org.

The YMCA puts in a lot of effort to recruit volunteer coaches before the season starts. However, due to the high number of registrations each season, there are times when we have teams that don't have a coach for the first week of practice. In such cases, a dedicated YMCA staff member steps in to coach the first practice while we continue our search for a coach. Rest assured, we have never had to cancel a whole team because we always manage to find a coach. Sometimes, we even work with two volunteers to accommodate everyone's schedules. So, you can be confident that we always strive to ensure every registered participant gets to play, and we have never had to issue refunds due to a lack of a coach.

The only sports with an equipment requirement are soccer and flag football. Soccer requires that your child wear shin guards during both practices and games. Flag football requires that your child wear a mouthguard during practices and games. For everything else, general athletic wear and athletic shoes are all your child needs. If you are in need of financial assistance to provide these pieces of equipment for your child, please contact sports@ymcasuperiorcal.org.

If you are having trouble logging into your existing YMCA account please email member services, or call the front desk of the YMCA and they can send you a password reset link.

Our registration prices remain affordable to keep youth sports accessible for all families. Starting in 2023, we introduced new multi-sport jerseys designed to save families money in the long run. Each child only needs one jersey for soccer, flag football, volleyball, and dodgeball, which can be used season after season until they outgrow it. Basketball also has its own jersey that works for all seasons.

Your registration fee pays for the things you see, like equipment (balls, goals, whistles), referees. And things you don't see, such as; the cost of using the facility, insurance coverage, fingerprinting for paid staff and volunteers, and wages for support staff and administration staff. The YMCA does not want to turn anyone away due to an inability to pay, so we hope those who cannot afford the league will use our Financial Assistance program: www.ymcasuperiorcal.org/Y-assist

Yes, if the request is made before the third game, you may be eligible for a prorated refund. This is subject to evaluation based on individual circumstances.

To apply for financial assistance complete the Y-Assist application and drop it off at the YMCA front desk or email it to membership@ymcasuperiorcal.org. You will be contacted via email within 5 business days to confirm your qualified award. Please allow time for this to get processed BEFORE priority registration ends.

To receive a full refund or credit on your account, you must submit your request by the Monday following the first game of the program.

We do not preemptively cancel games based on weather forecasts. Instead, we assess conditions at game time. If it is raining during the game, the referee will make the call regarding gameplay. We encourage all players to show up and attempt to play unless the conditions are too extreme. We do not schedule makeup games due to budget constraints. Each Saturday, we have referees present for all scheduled games, whether the game is played or not so we encourage teams to try to play on if the weather is mild. We do not have the budget to pay the referees for an additional game day.
