Pilates Reformer Private Instruction
In addition to, or as an alternative to, group classes you can receive private or semi-private Pilates Reformer instruction – great for individuals, couples, or friends who want personalized instruction for their specific needs. These sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the instructor and members, outside the normal group class schedule times.

Pilates is an exercise system to strengthen muscles, increase mobility, and improve overall health. Pilates can be performed on a mat and on specialized Pilates equipment.
Pilates focuses on engaging the mind and body together with attention to breath, proper form, and efficient movement patterns. Pilates strengthens the core, improves spinal mobility, increases coordination, improves balance, and decreases stress. Pilates focuses on learning to move better so the benefits are felt in everyday life.
Pilates exercises are low impact and appropriate and beneficial for all bodies. You will love the short and long-term health benefits.

Anybody and every body can take Mat Pilates. Mat Pilates group classes are included with your YMCA membership at no additional cost. Registration is encouraged but not required. No prerequisites are required to join a mat class.

Mat Pilates Class Formats:
- Mat Pilates – Our Mat Pilates classes offer a system of controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the body. These classes are designed to accommodate and challenge both beginners and experienced participants, focusing on building strength, enhancing flexibility, and improving posture. Movements can be modified or intensified to suit all fitness levels, promoting long, lean muscle development without bulk and relieving stress. Mat classes involve standing, kneeling, sitting, and laying on the mat and may involve additional props (exercise bands, rings, balls, etc.). Modifications and progressions are offered.
- Seated Pilates (currently called Chair Pilates) – Our Seated Mat Pilates classes offer a workout based on the same Pilates principles in a safe seated environment. These classes offer a system of controlled exercises that engage the mind and condition the body. These classes are designed to accommodate and challenge both beginners and experienced participants, focusing on building strength, enhancing flexibility, and improving posture. Movements can be modified or intensified to suit various fitness levels, promoting long, lean muscle development without bulk and relieving stress. Seated (Mat) Pilates classes offer exercises done in a seated position and may involve additional props (bands, rings, balls, etc). Modifications and progressions are offered.

Mat Pilates Class Levels:
- Level 1 – Beginner Mat Pilates classes offer a full body workout with a focus on Pilates principles – breath, concentration, control, balance, and mobility. Although the choreography and pace of the exercises is simple, you will experience a full body workout in a safe and supportive environment, with a good dose of fun.
- Level 2 – Intermediate Mat Pilates classes, build upon our Level 1 classes and offer a full body workout using Pilates principles and enhanced choreography and challenge options. Healthy individuals without mobility issues may progress to Level 2 at their own discretion after learning Pilates terms and concepts from Level 1.
- Level 3 – Advanced Mat Pilates classes offer a full body workout using Pilates principles in a faster paced environment with extensive challenges offered. Level 3 participants are expected to require minimal or no modifications and have a solid understanding of, and extensive experience practicing, Pilates terms, exercises, and safety practices, requiring minimal explanation of basics and a focus on exploring challenging options and variations.
- Mixed Level – Mixed Level Pilates (sometimes called All Levels) classes offer a full body workout using Pilates principles in a supportive environment with multiple progression options. All levels of Pilates practitioners are welcome to attend. Mixed level classes encourage growth in your Pilates practice and are open to all levels.

“Pilates Reformer” is the term used by the YMCA Superior California to refer to any Pilates class using specialized Pilates equipment such as the Reformer or the Pilates Chair. Because of equipment capacity and complexity, participation in these classes requires:
- A Pilates Reformer Orientation Schedules | YMCA of Superior California
- An additional fee, beyond your YMCA membership
Once a YMCA member has successfully completed the Pilates Orientation, an Alert will be added to their account in Daxco stating the member is “Cleared for Reformer Pilates”. Only members with this Alert on their account may sign up for Pilates Reformer classes.
There are several factors that might impact your decision to participate in group classes or private instruction. Many members enjoy both.
- Pilates Reformer Group Classes – The individual benefits and results of Pilates with the accountability and camaraderie of a like-minded community. YMCA offers Pilates Reformer group classes in a variety of formats and levels, some weekly and some in a pop-up fashion. - These classes cost an additional $21 - $25 per class depending on how many class credits the member wants to purchase in advance, see Pilates Reformer Group Classes Pricing, below.
- Registration for group classes is required because of equipment capacity.
- At Rollingwood there is a maximum of 6 people per class
- At Capital there is a maximum of 8 people per class (except for the Circuit class which is capped at 9 people at Capital).
- Members sign up for classes through their Y360 account or ask the Front Desk for assistance.
- A 24 hour cancellation policy applies for group classes. If you cancel within that window or do not attend class you will be charged
- All attendees must attend a Pilates Reformer Orientation and be cleared by the instructor before joining a group class.

- Pilates Reformer Private Instruction – In addition to or as an alternative to small group classes, you can receive Pilates Reformer instruction in a 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 environment – great for couples or friends who want personalized instruction for their specific needs. Customized programs designed for both beginners and seasoned veterans. Accomplish your goals next to your best friend!
- These sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the instructor and members, outside the normal group class schedule times.
- Typically these sessions are for 1, 2, or 3 people. You select your exercise buddies and the instructor you want to work with and then work with that instructor to schedule sessions. - These sessions are not registered in Y360 and these private sessions do not appear on the Pilates Reformer schedule.

- A Pilates Assessment is a specialized private instruction session taking a deep dive into assessing the member’s gait, posture, flexibility, balance, and strength needs and developing a going-forward plan. Pilates Assessments are booked like other private instruction sessions.
- Pilates Reformer Small Group Training Sessions – Similar to Personal Training SGt, Pilates SGT or Small Group Training are multi-week, additional cost trainings, often with a targeted theme. For example, an 8 week “SGT – Prepare for Ski Season” session or a 12 week “SGT – Summer Core Burner” session. Members may sign up and pay for these small group trainings in addition to their membership. Registration, prerequisites, and costs for each SGT will be published when each SGT is announced. Pilates Reformer Class Formats:
- Reformer Class – Reformer classes primarily utilize the Pilates Reformer and may involve additional Pilates equipment such as the Tower, Arc, Chair, and other props (jump board, exercise bands, rings, balls, etc.) to improve strength, flexibility, range of motion and balance. The Reformer and specialized Pilates equipment support proper alignment and form where needed and offer additional options and challenges as well.
- Chair Class – Pilates Chair classes primarily utilize the Pilates Chair and may involve other props (bands, balls, rings, etc.). Chair exercises provide an invigorating strength challenge. While not required it is recommended to complete at least 10 Reformer classes before progressing to Chair classes.
- Jump board – Jump board classes utilize the Pilates Reformer and attached jump board for much of the session, providing a cardio kick to your Pilates based workout. This class may use additional props (box, ball, bands, etc.). This class is fast paced and high energy.
- Circuit – Circuit is a fun way to bring some cardio to your Pilates routine! In this class each Reformer is set up for a specific exercise series and you rotate through the stations in ~3 minute intervals. This is a great way to experience some fun equipment (Reformer, Chair, Tower, jump board, etc.) in a safe and customizable environment. You have full control over your workout and have a supportive instructor on hand for advice. Come see how fun the Circuit can be! Recommended for members who have completed at least 10 Reformer Pilates classes. Please contact an instructor if you have any questions about this class or your enrollment.

Pilates Reformer Group Class Pricing:
- 1 Class Credit $25
- 6 Class Credits $138 ($23 per class)
- 15 Class Credits $315 ($21 per class)
Members can purchase these pre-paid class credits under “Register for Programs” in Y360, under Pilates Reformer. Please be careful to select Rollingwood or Capital.
Although it is not encouraged, it is possible for members to book group classes without pre-purchasing class credits. If members do not have any remaining pre-paid credits on their account when the instructor redeems attendees (usually the day after the class) they will be charged the $25 class price.
Credits currently expire 6 months from the date of purchase.
Pilates Reformer Private Instruction Pricing:
- 1 Private Session Credit $85
- 4 Private Session Credits $320 ($80 per session)
- 8 Private Session Credits $600 ($75 per session)
- 12 Private Session Credits $840 ($70 per session)

Members must pre-purchase private instruction sessions before booking sessions with an instructor.
A Pilates Orientation is an introduction to the specialized Pilates equipment used in Pilates Reformer classes as well as Pilates Principles in general and the specific rules and procedures around class registration. An orientation is also time for the instructor to learn about a member's goals, unique needs and desires, and discuss group classes versus private instruction. A Pilates Assessment is just one example of a specific Pilates private instruction session. Currently there is a special price for this specific targeted session. This term is being phased out and in the future these will just be private instruction sessions.

Up to 6 at Rollingwood and up to 8 at Capital. (Note: the Circuit class format allows one additional person so 7 at Rollingwood and 9 at Capital)
You and your instructor can decide but typically it is 1, 2, or 3 people for optimal individual instruction.
All 6 Reformers at the Rollingwood location have Towers. Currently 4 of the 8 Reformers at Capital have Towers.
Once a YMCA member has successfully demonstrated safety and proficiency with the Pilates equipment, an Alert will be added to their account in Daxko stating the member is “Cleared to Solo”. Only members with this Alert on their account may use the Pilates Studio outside of group classes or private instruction. Anyone without this Alert on their account may be asked to leave the Pilates Studio by any YMCA employee for safety purposes. If you wish to use the Pilates Studio, please ask a Pilates Instructor to evaluate you for the Cleared to Solo designation.
Sign up for a Pilates Reformer Orientation at either Rollingwood or Capital YMCA. You can attend an Orientation at either location, regardless of where you plan to take classes.
